What is the pH of US Hemp Coir?

Our hemp hurd component has a natural pH of approximately 5.0 — similar to or slightly lower than sphagnum peat moss. This makes it well-suited for acid-loving plants with little to no adjustment. For crops requiring a higher pH, a small lime amendment brings the finished mix into the ideal range.

Is US Hemp Coir a direct drop-in replacement for peat moss?

Yes — at substitution rates of 33–66%, hemp coir performs as a functionally equivalent replacement for peat in container growing media. Independent trials found that plants grown in these blends were indistinguishable from those grown in standard peat-based mixes, with the same fertility requirements and market quality.

Can I use hemp coir directly on my lawn?

Absolutely — it's one of our most popular applications. Simply spread US Hemp Coir across your lawn at ¼ to ½ inch depth, rake lightly to work the fibers between grass blades, and water in thoroughly. The hemp fiber locks moisture at the root zone, reduces water runoff, and feeds soil microbes that support greener, thicker grass. Works on all grass types, cool season and warm season.

What is the difference between hemp fiber and hemp hurd?

Hemp fiber comes from the outer skin of the hemp stalk — long, silky strands used in textiles. Hemp hurd is the dense, woody inner core. In our blend, the hurd provides water retention and structural body similar to peat, while the fiber adds aeration and prevents compaction.

Will hemp coir change my watering or fertilization schedule?

UConn's research specifically tested this. Plants grown in hemp hurd media required the same fertilization program as peat-based controls. Irrigation schedules may need minor adjustment during your initial trial period, but most growers report negligible changes.

Does the product contain seeds or debris?

Our product is processed to a clean 2mm particle size and is thoroughly screened to remove debris and hemp seeds. Early UConn trials identified seed contamination as an issue with certain raw hurd sources; our processing protocol specifically eliminates this concern.

What crops is US Hemp Coir proven to work with?

UConn trials have validated performance across annual bedding plants (petunia, geranium), vegetables (tomato), deciduous and evergreen shrubs (forsythia, bayberry, microbiota), herbaceous perennials, and woody ornamentals. Research is ongoing to expand this list further.
